SAMHIN (South Asian Mental Health Initiative and Network) serves to educate, engage, and empower the South Asian community to promote mental health literacy. The New Jersey based organization was founded in 2014 by Dr. Vasudev Makhija, a psychiatrist in the area for the past several decades. Dr. Makhija's vision for SAMHIN is to overcome the stigma associated with mental health and improve the South Asian community through educational programs on the importance of mental wellness. SAMHIN's initiatives include workshops, distribution of educational materials, Alcoholics Anonymous sessions in NJ, and a Mental Health Provider Directory aimed at connecting individuals with care providers.
The Need: SAMHIN is based in New Jersey and aims to expand across the U.S. They seek to grow their initiatives to include drug abuse and suicide support groups, and a program providing free mental health care to disadvantaged members of the South Asian community. These feats are impossible without the monetary support of generous donors.
